SAFETY LEADERSHIP

I’m very excited to finally get this post published! I’ve been reading about Paul O’Neill and what he achieved at Alcoa for some time now and I’m keen to share his story with those who have not heard of him.

He really is an example of a leader who has led with heart and put his people first and he attributes all the success at Alcoa during his leadership to a focus on workplace health & safety.

'Safety is a unifying point of collaboration – that need or desire to be safe and healthy does not discriminate depending on your role or job title in the organisation'. Paul H. O'Neill Click To Tweet

O’Neill used safety as a unifying point of collaboration in the business and created a habit around providing safe & healthy work, from executive to those on the factory floor.

By getting people to be more conscious about the health & safety of their colleagues and/or workers and promoting that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect (no matter their pay grade, race, ethnicity, sex, age, or other characteristics), O’Neill created a chain reaction that led to broader business improvements.

In fact, those improvements created efficiencies that increased the company’s market capitalisation by $27 billion and led to the company becoming one of the best performing stocks on the Dow Jones Index.

If you’re new to this story, buckle up, because this is a good one for all business leaders!

So let’s get started…

When you’re finished watching, I’d love to know:

  • Is there someone you would like me to do a leadership case study on?

Let me know and I will save those for future videos.

Important: share your thoughts and ideas directly in the comments. Links to other posts, videos, etc. will be removed.

Thank you so much for adding to the conversation!
