Make a positive impact.

If you’re like most of my readers, you’re already a high achiever. It’s part of why you’ve found yourself on a board of directors.

But that’s not the only reason you took on the role of a company director.

You want your work on the board to make a positive impact.

But what does that look like?

Well, this much I know to be true. As a board member, you influence company culture by what you say and do in the boardroom; indeed, you influence priorities, goals and the focus of everyone’s attention by what you give your attention to, or what you choose to ignore.

It’s also true that company culture influences how people feel at work; meaning, you influence whether people feel safe, healthy and cared for at work.

With that said, I’ve made it my mission to help board members, like yourself, use their influence to make a positive impact on the health, happiness and resilience of our society, by helping you confidently lead a culture where people feel they matter.

It’s personal.

A decade ago, companies were making headlines for problems such as bribery, financial manipulation, and fraud, but we’re now seeing stress, burnout, suicide and mental illness, loneliness, low engagement, lack of meaning and purpose, bullying and sexual harassment as some of the critical issues of our time.

Sadly, every day people die as a result of workplace incidents or work-related diseases – in fact, more than 2.5 million people around the globe die every year! And that doesn’t include the over 300 million people who suffer a non-fatal work-related injury or illness, which can lead to chronic physical pain and drug dependency.

But these issues are not contained in our workplace, they have an effect on our families, our relationships and generally how we feel about ourselves – and the big picture is, all of this has a considerable impact on the health, happiness and resilience of our society.

Like you, I also want to make a positive impact.

That’s why I’ve spent over a decade working in the health & safety profession because I’m making a difference in people’s lives. I can have a positive impact on how YOUR wife, husband, son, daughter, mother or father feel at the end of the day and that has an impact on their relationships with you and others in their life, their self-worth, and overall, their health, just by making them feel safe and cared for while they’re at work!

And of course by doing so, I can help society be healthier, happier and overall more resilient because science tells us that our well-being and happiness is directly correlated to our levels of resilience.

But here’s the kicker …

Live A Meaningful Life

When we make other people feel loved and cared for, WE feel good.

When we feel like our life or our work is meaningful, we feel good.

Life’s too short to not be thinking about how our work contributes to our well-being, particularly when we spend most of our waking moments working, and why should this be any different for board members?!

Some people may argue that work is work and they achieve their meaning and purpose through hobbies and volunteering. However, research has shown that when we align our life, including our career, to our values, find work that brings meaning to our life, and lead with a mindset of serving others, we have the best chance to flourish and thrive and live a meaningful life.

And when we flourish, we:

Have higher levels of energy and vitality
Are more likely to achieve our goals (i.e. we are more successful)
Are more confident
Perform better at work
Are more engaged
Improve our overall well-being
Are more resilient.

This means, every day we all have an opportunity to live a happy and meaningful life through the work we do and by how we choose to lead.

I’m here to serve. I’ve built my company to empower and inspire board members to see and treat the health, safety and well-being of the people in their organization as the cornerstone of organizational effectiveness and the path through which any board member can make a positive impact and leave a lasting legacy.
